There was a significant maintenance release of WordPerfect 5.0 dated September
16, 1988, later updated to September 23 (but with all disks except WP1 and WP2
retaining the 9/16 files). The major enhancements and fixes in this 9/16
release included:
- Print Quality is now an option settable via Setup instead of being
locked into a default of High.
- When saving via TextOut to a DOS Text file, Tabs and Indents are now
converted to space fill; saving to Generic WP format saves them as
Tab characters.
- The character n~ (ASCII 164) was being treated as a space by the
spellchecker, now corrected.
- WP 4.2 dictionaries with extended characters now convert properly to 5.0
format using SPELL.EXE.
- When using expanded memory, WP allocates all available memory to itself
if running under Shell with the /V switch.
- New Advanced Macros documentation has been added to the learning diskette;
MACRODOC.EXE is a self-expanding file. [NB: this same file is available
on CIS WPSG in Library 0 and MACDOC.EXE]
- Graphics boxes that were bumped to the next page had the possibility of
overwriting another graphic at the top of that page; WP now places
"bumped" graphics one below the other.
- Problems importing EPS (Postscript) graphics files were fixed.
- International language versions now request a license number when the
program is initially started up; this license number is then displayed
on the initial help screen next to the program date.
- Hyphenation added an option to add words to the hyphen exception
dictionary (.HYD) that should not be hyphenated.
- Merge now allows secondary merge files in WP 4.2 format.
- Foreign language packaged changed the default form to be the standard
paper size for the appropriate country/language.
- When selecting a printer, updating fonts is greatly speeded up.
- WP now supports graphics on the Xerox 4045 printer.
- The Spellchecker is now able to find WP{WP}EN.LEX in the directory
specified, even if it is not the default.
- A style called "Pleading" for creating legal pleading papers was added
to the style library.
- The "W" option was added to the Units of Measurment menu; this displays
measurments in 1200ths of an inch, the internal measurement used by WP.
--------------------------------------------
There was a minor interim release on 10/7/88, with the following fixes
and enhancements:
- Problem with disappearing text on Zenith and IBM Convertible laptops and
possibly other computers with a HH-Up through a large part of the
document have been corrected.
- "Disappearing cursor" problems when returning from View on some EGA cards
has been eliminated by using the /F1 startup option.
- Width problem with PS fonts and document display when PS fonts were added
or reformatted for a different printer that had PS fonts corrected.
- Fixed a cache problem. Moving through text with a PS font that did not
contain all possible character sets might corrupt part of cache memory.
- Document conversion 4.2-5.0: will now add print head bias to margin when
converting. Also added a margin bias as part of the CRS file.
- Problem converting 3.0 footnotes to 5.0 footnotes corrected.
- Added /F1 and /F2 options for disappearing cursor (F1) and special text
modes (F2).
- Footnotes containing a number greater than 1000 would not convert back
to 4.2 correctly, now fixed.
- 5.0 base font changes are now converted to font/pitch codes in 4.2
conversion but the font number is always 1.
--------------------------------------------
There was a major new release of WordPerfect 5.0 on 11/15/88. Fixes and
enhancements include:
- Change (enhancement) to Word Search in List Files: Date Strings may
be specified in formats other than the US format.
- "Invalid Display File Format" error message which occurred when WP could
not find the .DRS files fixed: WP will now search for the .DRS files in
the directory specified in Setup, then in WP.EXE's directory, and finally
in the default directory.
- Words containing apostrophes and single quotes no longer considered
misspelled.
- Other Speller fixes.
- The "Liebson problem" of editing a header/footer/text box within a style
or moving the header/footer/text box into a style is fixed.
- Cursor on the AT&T 6300 now maintains width and position.
--------------------------------------------
There is also a 10/10/88 release of Library 2.0. It officially allows the /O
option to fill extended memory before spilling to disk, and it allows task
switching by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Letter, leaving Alt-Shift-Letter available for
one key shell macros.
